LIKE FALL LEAVES

The one of the best verses of Babur is his ghazal “Hazon yaprogi yanligh” (Like fall leaves) Its high artistic value had been showed beautifully and effectively. The ghazal can be set as a striking example of tanosib technique (the use of related with each other and having common meaning words in poetry) used in eastern poetry.

                                    Like fall leaves

Like fall leaves I yellowed with dreams of thy flower look,
Oh, tulip-soul, see my face yellowing, spare me, let me off the hook.

Thee, the rose, still keep thy arrogance, like a cypress tree,
This made me besought under thy feet and like fall leaves shook.

Thee may stay in the oasis of charm in bliss like flower,
As forwards garden of low and toughness I my steps took.

My yellow face, fall-leaves-red tears, lead to the hate of the people,
There is a God, I broke away when asked the spring me to cloak.

What a destiny of mine! I searched but could not find my joy,
Although I looked for happiness every leaf of the fate book.

For me, Babur, does not make sense how the people judge my life,
I compared myself with goods and bads in every cranny and nook.

In first couplet, specific features of autumn are described. The fall leaves are specific symbol of this season. This has particular meaning. The matter is parting. In classic Uzbek poetry the joy and … are mainly described in connection with spring. From this point, connection of parting with autumn by Babur is not by chance. The man in love uses I yellowed to describe his state. His yellowing close to the autumn falls. In the description of the autumn, there is a point to draw attention. This is appearance of the beloved girl. She has nothing that associates her with autumn. She has flower look. Such description appears again, when he calls her tulip-soul. In the poem, the focus is not the description of appearance of the girl, but the inner state of the man in love, so the lyric hero turns the attention to his own appearance – reminds about his face yellowing. He strengthens this with unique appeal: spare me, let me off the hook.
If to pay attention, it is easy to notice the advantage of yellow-connected descriptions. Fall leaves – yellowed face performs such function. In contrast to this, expressions such flower look and tulip-soul are used.
The first couplet of the ghazal can be assessed as the complaints of parting of the man in love and his attempts to draw his beloved’s attention to this. In the first line, he uses flower look to describe her beautiful face. To characterize her figure he uses the expression cypress tree. In this case, he wants to describe her slenderness. Using cypress tree as the way of describing ideal figure of girls is customary for classic Uzbek literature, what the poet skillfully applies in the poem.  However, unlike the traditional approach, the poet adds feature of arrogance and creates new image of cypress tree.
The lyric hero uses the fall leaves many times. In the first line, he focuses the attention to the color of the leaves. When he expresses like fall leaves shook, in this case their state on the ground set the scene. The poet sees commonality between shake of leaves and appeal of the man in love.
The fall leaves is used in the third couplet too. From the poet’s view, life is close to a garden. There is a connection between fall of leaves and leaving the life. Here is draws attention hero’s wish to her beloved: Thee may stay in the oasis of charm in bliss like flower. Whatever happens, she should be in happiness.
The next couplet continues the coherence. The man repeatedly compares himself with leaves. He adds expressions yellow face, fall-leaves-red tears.
If to observe autumn, the fall leaves have red and yellow colors. Babur, considering this, uses such similes to describe his tears and face.
The poet tells about hate of the people. What can cause to this? Here the state of the hero with autumn in the background should be paid attention. In such conditions, for him the attractiveness cannot be an urgent matter. This explains human relations when ones do not understand the difficulties of others. That may explain why he breaks away in the next line.
The next couplet gives new meaning to the word leaf – page of book. The hero wonders about his fate: What a destiny of mine! He cannot find his joy, though he looked for happiness every leaf of the fate book.
In such psychological conditions, the lyric hero does not pay much attention to the opinions of others. For him does not make sense how the people judge his life, admire or offend him. However, this is not because of his vanity or conceit, but his big life experience, hard-bittenness.
In general, it not difficult to notice that the hero has his own world that he does not want to share with others and this consoles him and keeps his hopes.
